2020 Ford F-150 vs. 2020 RAM 1500

When you're looking at trucks, the two giants in this category are the Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500. Both pickups have a lot to offer buyers for work and for play. While they are even in a lot of ways, the differences often matter to truck lovers.

Performance

If you're buying a pickup, performance is probably going to be one of your top criteria. Both the 2020 Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500 offer three engines for the basic trim. However, the two lower engines on the F-150 have slightly more power. The Ford offers a 3.3L V6 at 290 horsepower compared to 260 horsepower for the 3.0L. The 2.7L V6 for the F-150 comes in with 325 horsepower while the 3.6L V6 for the 1500 offers 305 horsepower. Move up in trims and you still only have the three to choose from on the RAM while the F-150 gives you a total of six engine options for ample power in any situation. The Ford also lets you select between two automatic transmissions as compared to one for the RAM.

Design

Both pickups look capable from the first glance, though the Ford F-150 is a little more rugged. Inside, you get multiple options for configurations, but only the Ford comes with a Regular Cab if you want a simple base model which is also cheaper. Both models offer luxury on the high-end trims with heated and ventilated seats. While you can easily customize either truck, the Ford offers more options with liners, bed steps and lockable storage bins to create your own personal look. In fact, customization options take up 40 pages in the order guide.

Fuel Economy

While efficiency may not be the number one focus for a work truck, more people are buying trucks for everyday driving and family trips. With that in mind, even slight differences in fuel economy can have a big impact. Both trucks get decent mpg with the 3.6L V6 engine, but the F-150 comes in just slightly better at 22 mpg as compared to the 20 mpg for the 1500.

Reputation

Both pickup trucks have impressed buyers in recent years, but only the Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in America. Not just best-selling truck but it outsells all vehicles. Of course, the RAM 1500 has achieved numerous awards and is recognized as a worthy competitor. However, many truck enthusiasts still embrace the Built Ford Tough philosophy when it comes to choosing their pickup. With both models coming in with good safety ratings and offering more conveniences, these trucks aren't just for work anymore.
